An air-lift reverse circulation (RC) drill rig is a specialized machine used in geotechnical engineering, pile foundation construction, and mineral sampling. We rely on it to handle complex geological conditions efficiently, continuously removing core samples or cuttings from the borehole. Compared to traditional rigs, it provides higher debris removal efficiency, faster drilling, and better adaptability to challenging environments. That is why it has become essential in geotechnical exploration, hydrological drilling, and deep foundation projects.
The air-lift reverse circulation rig operates using a unique reverse circulation method. We send compressed air down the dual-wall drill rods to a certain depth, where it mixes with circulating fluid through a mixer. The resulting air-liquid mixture has a lower density than the drilling fluid, creating a pressure difference in the borehole. This difference drives the mixture upward at high speed, continuously transporting cuttings and cores to the surface.
The extracted three-phase mixture of gas, liquid, and solids passes through a reverse circulation vibrating screen and then into a settling tank. The settled slurry is returned to the borehole to replenish the circulating fluid. This continuous cycle ensures efficient drilling while reducing secondary crushing and maintaining the integrity of the samples.

We work with rigs composed of several key components: drill rods, drill bits, guides, the mast, crawler tracks, and a hydraulic system. Drill bits are equipped with multiple roller-cone teeth, and the rods contain debris channels along with independent air and discharge ports, ensuring high-efficiency reverse circulation.
Crawler-mounted rigs often use a combination of main rods, transition rods, and reverse circulation rods, some with centering rings for better guidance. The rig is completed with a four-pulley hoist, mast, hoist frame, and borehole equipment, allowing us to maintain stable operation under continuous use and challenging geologies.
We see several key advantages of the rig:
Efficient debris removal: The reverse circulation process rapidly clears cuttings, reduces repeated crushing, and improves drilling speed while maintaining borehole quality.
Environmentally friendly operation: The rig uses compressed air rather than large volumes of water or chemical additives, reducing environmental impact. It also keeps rock cuttings clean for analysis and mineral identification.
Full hydraulic operation: Mast lifting, powerhead rotation, and rod handling are all hydraulically controlled, lowering labor intensity and simplifying operation.
Durable and reliable: Key components are made of high-strength, wear- and corrosion-resistant materials, and the diesel engine provides stable power with low maintenance costs.
Adaptable to complex ground conditions: Reverse circulation allows stable drilling in loose soils, hard rock, large-diameter deep-water piles, or inclined rock-embedded piles, maintaining borehole accuracy and reducing guidance issues and sticking.

We use air-lift reverse circulation rigs in various challenging geological environments, including high-altitude areas, thick permafrost layers, and regions with abundant groundwater. They are suitable for mineral exploration, hydrological and geotechnical surveys, and can complete deep piles, rock-embedded piles, or inclined piles with precision.
In foundation projects, the rigs have been employed for bridge piers, port wharves, and ultra-large-diameter deep-water piles. They maintain borehole accuracy and provide clean, representative rock cuttings for sampling. Using this type of rig allows us to complete complex drilling projects efficiently and safely.
We find that air-lift reverse circulation drill rigs increase drilling efficiency while ensuring stable operations and sample integrity. Understanding the working principle, structural components, and project applications helps us make informed decisions in equipment selection and use. This approach ultimately improves project productivity and maximizes return on investment.
